Plays an integral part in immune health

Vitamin A

Vitamin A plays an integral role in immune health and may be especially beneficial for warding off illness and infections. According to a review out of Baltimore, a deficiency in this key vitamin can weaken immunity and even alter the function of immune cells. Vitamin A is also crucial for the development of certain immune cells necessary to fight inflammation and infection, earning it a slot as one of the best supplements to boost the immune system.

Supports immune system

Vitamin C

Vitamin C plays a central role in immune function and is often used to help bump up your body’s defenses against infection. Impressively enough, one 2006 trial in Annals of Nutrition & Metabolism even found that getting enough vitamin C in your diet could help decrease symptoms and shorten the duration of respiratory infections. Vitamin C supports the body’s immune system by protecting the integrity of cells, and affecting the production and function of white blood cells.

Limits decline of immune system

Zinc

Zinc is vital for a healthy immune system, correctly synthesizing DNA, promoting healthy growth during childhood, and healing wounds. Diminished immune function increases the susceptibility to pneumonia and influenza, in addition to heightening the risk for developing autoimmune diseases and cancers. Maintaining an adequate zinc status can limit the decline in immune function that often occurs with age. Studies involving older people supplementing with zinc suggest that improving zinc status improves immune system function and resistance to infection. In a 2007 study, adults ages 55 to 87 had lower plasma zinc and higher oxidative stress and inflammatory markers compared to younger adults. Half of the older adults took zinc supplements for 12 months, and the other half took a placebo. The rate of respiratory infections and markers of inflammation and oxidative stress were lower in the zinc group than in the placebo group.

Boosts immune system

Vitamin D

Vitamin D can boost your immune system, while simultaneously regulating the arm of the immune system involved in autoimmunity. To prevent an autoimmune response, vitamin D regulates Th1 and Th2 cells, the white blood cells that are programmed to attack the cells and tissues of your body, thus causing an autoimmune response. Research shows that vitamin D plays an important role in immune function, and a deficiency in it is shown to increase your susceptibility to infection. "Some studies have shown that vitamin D deficiency is even associated with greater risk of self-reported upper respiratory tract infections. There are Vitamin D receptors and activating enzymes on the surfaces of all White Blood Cells. The role that vitamin D plays in keeping the immune system healthy is very complex because the immune system has to be perfectly balanced. If there is too much stimulation, autoimmune diseases can set in. If there is not enough immune system activity, frequent infections can occur.

Low levels of vitamin D have been linked with both extremes, and low levels of vitamin D have been associated with worsening autoimmune diseases. Low levels of vitamin D are not the underlying cause of the autoimmune disease, but low levels of vitamin D can make autoimmune disease states worse

Defends against germs

Echinacea

Extracts of echinacea do seem to have an effect on the immune system, your body's defense against germs. Research shows it increases the number of white blood cells, which fight infections. Boosted Immune System
Perhaps the most common usage of echinacea relates to its impact on the immune system. This is because the chemical constituents within this herbal plant can directly affect the chemical processes of the immune system. Regular intake can reduce your chances of catching a cold by 50% and if you are already ill or have the flu, taking echinacea can help reduce the duration of your cold.

Strengthens the bodies antiviral immunities

Astragalus

Astragalus might be of particular interest to those whose immune system is weakened due to pre-existing illnesses. Several clinical trials suggest that astragalus possesses significant immune boosting benefits. It helps the body to increase the production of white blood cells, produce more antibodies and strengthens the body’s antiviral immunity.

Replenishes antioxidants in your body

N-acetyl cysteine (NAC)

N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is a supplement form of cysteine. Consuming adequate cysteine and NAC is important for a variety of health reasons — including replenishing the most powerful antioxidant in your body, glutathione . These amino acids also help with chronic respiratory conditions.

N-Acetylcysteine is a form of the amino acid cysteine. It seems to support immune system function through:
• Replenishing glutathione. Glutathione is a potent antioxidant needed for optimal immune system function.
• Breaking down mucus. N-Acetylcysteine helps clear mucus seen in respiratory conditions such as bronchitis.
• Protecting against bacteria. N-Acetylcysteine is capable of disrupting the biofilms of harmful bacteria.

stimulates the immune system

Turkey Tail mushroom

We don’t know exactly how the turkey tail mushroom product used in this trial worked to boost immunity. Paul Stamets, director of research and founder of Fungi Perfecti, said that one theory holds that the mushroom improves the ability of the immune system’s natural killer cells to attack cancer cells. A 2011 study on turkey tail found that it also contained a unique protein, called TVC, that both stimulated the immune system and modulated its response.

Fights off germs

Oregano oil

Oregano oil is a powerful tool for the immune system, especially when it encounters outside invaders. It has such a strong action against germs that it could easily defeat Salmonella.
Researchers at Georgetown University Medical Center said, “New, safe agents are needed to…overcome harmful organisms… Based on our previous experience and that of others, we postulated that herbal essential oils, such as those of Origanum (oregano oil)…offer such possibilities.
Oregano Oil Active Against Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth
Small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is the term used to describe an abnormal rise in overall bacterial population of the small intestine. It can happen when surgery, disease or medications slow the intestinal tract, which creates a breeding ground for bacteria. This can negatively impact immune health since your gut microbiome regulates your immune homeostasis. Oil of oregano was one of those chosen because it’s well-documented that it “directly kills or strongly inhibits the growth of intestinal microbes.

Fights off infection

Reishi mushroom

One of the most important effects of the reishi mushroom is that it can boost your immune system (4Trusted Source).
While some details are still uncertain, test-tube studies have shown that reishi can affect the genes in white blood cells, which are critical parts of your immune system.
What’s more, these studies have found that some forms of reishi may alter inflammation pathways in white blood cells.
Research in cancer patients has shown that some of the molecules found in the mushroom can increase the activity of a type of white blood cell called natural killer cells.
Natural killer cells fight infections and cancer in the body.
Another study found that reishi can increase the number of other white blood cells (lymphocytes) in those with colorectal cancer.
Although most immune system benefits of reishi mushroom have been seen in those who are ill, some evidence has shown that it can help healthy people, too.
In one study, the fungus improved lymphocyte function, which helps fight infections and cancer, in athletes exposed to stressful conditions.
However, other research in healthy adults showed no improvement in immune function or inflammation after 4 weeks of taking reishi extract.
Overall, it is clear that reishi impacts white blood cells and immune function. More research is needed to determine the extent of the benefits in the healthy and ill.

Improves white blood cells

Mitake mushroom

The maitake mushroom (Grifola frondosa) has been recognized as a source of immune enhancing compounds that are being shown to offer significant health benefits.
In the early 1980’s, Dr. Nanba was researching the immune enhancing properties of mushrooms when he discovered that maitake extracts demonstrated more pronounced antitumor activity in animal tests than other mushroom extracts. One of the key benefits of maitake was the apparent ability to be effective when given orally. In contrast, the other mushrooms Dr. Nanba was studying, (such as shiitake) only appeared to be effective when injected into the bloodstream.
In 1984, Dr. Nanba identified a specific extract of maitake that possessed a significant ability to stimulate white blood cells known as macrophages (literal translation “big eaters”). These white blood cells significantly phagocytize or engulf foreign particles including cancer cells, bacteria and cellular debris. The extract contained polysaccharide compounds (beta 1-6 glucan and beta 1-3 glucan) and protein.
While other medicinal mushrooms are believed to have similar beta-glucan constituents, Dr. Nanba found that the beta-glucans found in maitake seem to have a unique and complex structure. The biggest difference was a greater number of branching side chains. It is thought that the greater the degree of branching, the higher the likelihood the beta-glucan will reach and activate a greater number of immune cells.

Fights off colds and flu

Elderberry Extract

One of the most well-studied elderberry syrup benefits is its powerful immune-boosting properties. The berries contain chemical compounds called anthocyanidins, which are known to have immunostimulant effects.
Research actually shows that elderberry extract is a safe, efficient and cost-effective treatment for cold and flu symptoms.
A 2016 study published in Nutrients showed that elderberry supplementation was able to reduce cold duration and symptoms in air travelers. Travelers using this herb from 10 days before travel until four to five days after arrival overseas experienced, on average, a two-day shorter duration of their colds as well as a noticeable reduction in cold symptoms.

Boosts bloodstream T-cells

Garlic

Eating garlic can boost the number of virus-fighting T-cells in your bloodstream -- important because colds and the flu are caused by viruses. Nutrition scientists from the University of Florida reported in the journal Clinical Nutrition in 2012 that taking aged garlic extract reduced the severity of cold and flu symptoms and that the symptoms went away faster in those who took the garlic extract than among those who didn't The scientists speculated that the garlic extract worked by boosting participants' immune cell function.
It's no coincidence that you always seem to catch a cold or the flu when you're overworked or stressed out. A research team from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh reported in the November 2011 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that the body loses its ability to fight off infections when it's constantly under stress. That's where garlic comes in -- it's been shown to fight stress and fatigue. Garlic can affect your adrenal glands' response to stress: Eat garlic, and your adrenals produce less stress hormones and thus reduce your level of fatigue

Improves gut health

Glutamine

Glutamine's Involvement in Gut Immunity
#1: Glutamine helps T-cells and macrophages do their job! It’s essential for proper GI, immune and muscle function.
#2: Glutamine helps maintain the structural integrity of the intestinal lining by preserving healthy gut mucosa and protecting the villi that line the gastrointestinal tract. In fact, nearly 70% of the immune system is located in the gut.
To carry out its important role in immune function, the gut must be in tip-top shape, however, due to poor diets, the overuse of antibiotics, excessive alcohol consumption, and a myriad of other reasons, many guts are not. But the amino acid L-glutamine has the ability to support a healthy gut and healthy immunity.

Supports the body's acid/alkaline balance

Lysine

Lysine helps strengthen the immune system by adjusting body chemistry so it is less hospitable to foreign organisms and supports the body's acid/alkaline balance. Its most common application is related to the herpes virus. Lysine is particularly important for the immune system as it has a crucial role in developing antibodies. Additionally this amino acid has important antiviral properties. Studies have shown that it is especially beneficial for safeguarding against the herpes virus. Scientists have also found evidence that it increases the effectiveness of L-arginine in promoting human growth hormone (HGH) release. Suminski and colleagues found that HGH levels were greater when weightlifters ingested arginine and lysine without exercise1. Additionally, scientists have found that this amino acid can help to reduce anxiety 2. It also plays an integral part in protein biosynthesis. The body uses lysine to build collagen together with the amino acids glycine and proline.
